Aims & Objectives

Community work in the Severn and Avon Vale

The Severn and Avon Vales Wetlands Partnership (SAVWP) are keen to make wetlands relevant and accessible to all.

There are currently many locations within the area that offer an intriguing insight into these valuable habitats, and the many opportunities they represent.

Community Work

Wetlands can be a focal point the community. An area for recreation, a place of work or spot for quiet contemplation.

Put simply, wetlands can perform a variety of functions for a wide range of people. The SAVWP are keen to offer the ‘community’ the support it needs to further its enjoyment of this habitat.

The Wetlands Development Officer (WDO) can offer free and impartial advice and support on any project aimed at furthering understanding and enjoyment of the wetland environment.

Recreation Groups

Water offers many opportunities for recreation. From angling to bird watching, long boating to the excitement of surfing the Severn Bore. The WDO can offer support in developing these opportunities with advice on funding, creating steering groups, project management and negotiations when issues occur.

School Parties

Wetlands can offer enormous scope for helping to deliver educational targets. There are currently many locations

within the Severn and Avon Vale such as the Wildfowl and Wetland Trusts’ facility at Slimbridge, that can cater for a wide variety of school parties. The SAVWP are keen to develop this resource.

User Groups and forums

In some cases it may be beneficial to establish a user group.
These associations give users the opportunity to come together with other like-minded individuals to represent their chosen activity, and to voice any concerns

they may have.

Project consultation and funding

Funding is often the most important factor in being able to realise the visions of user groups. The WDO is able to offer independent advice on sources suitable of funding using the SAVWP’s funding database and can also assist with the creation and submission of funding bids.
Assistance can also be offered in terms

of locating match funding and sourcing suitable partners and contractors as required.
